Walter Walsh Webster was born on 4 October 1885 at 198 Bethnal Green Road, Bethnal Green, Hackney, Middlesex, England. He was the sixth born (fourth son) of William James Webster (1853-1928) and Elizabeth Amelia Aburn (1853-1938). His parents married on 4 June 1874 in Whitechapel in England. Walter's mother's sister, Mary Ann (Marion) Aburn married James Walsh on 1 October 1874 in Victoria, Australia and this is presumably where the name Walsh came from.

Like his brothers, Walter attended the Turin Road School in Bethnal Green. He started there in July 1893.

Walter married Jane Ingram Robson on 9 June 1909 in St Margaret’s Church, Stanford Rivers, Essex, England. Jane died on 19 September 1911.

Walter remarried, this time to Phyllis Marion (Poppy) Bird, daughter of Clarence Frederick Bird and Ellen Jane (Gaga) Ladler, on 23 October 1916 at St Saviour's, Anzac Street, Dartmouth, Devon, England. She died 2 July 1988.

Poppy and Walter had three children, Winsome Walsh (Biddy) Webster (11 September 1917 - 18 March 2000); and twins Patricia Walsh Webster (12 August 1920 - 11 September 1995) and Warwick Walsh Webster (12 August 1920 - 12 September 2012).

Walter died on 1 May 1976 at "Torwood", Manor Road, High Beach, Loughton, Essex, England, at the age of 90.
